LADY SULTAN ADİLE

(1826-1899)
II. Mahmud’s Doughter, Sultan Abdülmecid and Sultan Abdülaziz’s Sister

Despite the European influence on women’s clothing at the Ottoman Palace, which had started in the early 19th century, the traditional clothing style continued well into the 1850s. Lady Sultan Adile preferred the traditional clothing style. Her caftan is a short jacket called “salta”, made of green velvet and embroidered in the Maraş technique. Her fez-shaped headgear is covered with a traditional lacework scarf called “yemeni”.
